Thailand maintains an extensive network of diplomatic missions worldwide, which includes embassies, consulates-general, consulates, and other representations. These missions help protect the interests of Thailand and Thai citizens abroad, promote cultural and economic ties, provide consular services, and support travelers and expatriates. Thailand currently has diplomatic missions in around 90 countries globally, with approximately 65 embassies and many consulates and other representations in various regions.
Many people make merit by offering alms to Buddhist monks at temples, reflecting gratitude and spiritual reflection. Streets, public squares, and neighborhoods are decorated with portraits of King Bhumibol, flags, and lights. Candlelight vigils or cultural performances may also take place. December 5 also serves as National Father’s Day in Thailand, since King Bhumibol is regarded as the “Father of the Nation.” Families often celebrate by honoring paternal figures with gifts and ceremonies.
