Its inscriptions, written in Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian cuneiform, introduce the kings not as conquerors, but as custodians of justice appointed by Ahura Mazda, the supreme god in Zoroastrianism. Massive limestone blocks, some weighing dozens of tons, were transported from nearby quarries. The precision with which these blocks were laid is astonishing—many fit so tightly that mortar was unnecessary.
Persepolis is built atop an immense stone terrace, partially carved into a mountain. The platform rises dramatically from the plain, giving the entire complex a commanding presence. The wide, shallow stairways were designed so dignitaries in long robes could ascend gracefully. Their sides are lined with reliefs that illustrate the empire’s diversity, showing Medes, Elamites, Egyptians, Lydians, Scythians, and more—all wearing traditional garments and carrying gifts.
