Deeply rooted in Persian culture, horsemanship had always been a symbol of nobility and valor. The Shah was an accomplished horseman, often seen riding at the royal stables or participating in polo matches. Polo, originally a Persian sport dating back over two millennia, was a source of both pride and enjoyment for him. He supported the revival of polo as a national sport and established royal teams that competed in international events. The Shah viewed polo as not just a pastime but a continuation of ancient traditions of chivalry, skill, and elegance.
His love for horses extended beyond sport; he personally oversaw breeding programs for purebred Persian-Arabian horses. In addition to equestrian sports, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi enjoyed more contemporary activities such as tennis and swimming. He was often seen playing tennis at the royal palaces in Tehran or on the Caspian coast. His dedication to fitness was well-known; he believed that a strong body contributed to a strong mind, and he maintained a regular exercise routine even amid the pressures of state affairs.
