Based on records from camera-traps, melanistic leopards occur foremost in tropical and subtropical moist forests. In 2019, a local conservationist, Letoluai Ambrose, working as a researcher for San Diego Zoo, and wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas, confirmed the existence of a melanistic leopard in Laikipia County, Kenya.
