The selfie, of course, isn’t new—it has been around since the advent of photography, when chemist-turned-photographer Robert Cornelius captured one in 1839. But in the past two years, it has become explosively popular


Then there was the Polaroid. First sold from 1948 but not truly “instant” until its 1970s heyday, Polaroid cameras could be held at arm’s length and encouraged people to take more intimate photos.
