The Role of Air Force Pilots in the Dhofar War

The Dhofar region, with its rugged mountains, desert terrain, and proximity to the Arabian Sea, provided ideal conditions for a guerrilla insurgency. The insurgents, mostly supported by the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) and other socialist states, aimed to overthrow the ruling Sultan of Oman, Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The Sultan’s regime, while modernizing the country, was initially unpopular in some areas, particularly in the remote Dhofar region.
