A century before the sky

In the 1920s, German and British companies were engaged in a “competition” to start air service, Sorber says, and Mittelholzer’s photography skills were a key promotional asset. A Swiss newspaper wrote about the aviator: “The people of Switzerland know what to expect from their Mr. Mittelholzer, who can not only pilot an aeroplane in all unknown countries but also take photographs and film while in flight.” After a botched landing 40 kilometers outside, Mittelholzer and mechanic Ernst Bisseger had a violent encounter with villagers before help finally arrived from the capital and their plane was repaired.
