In July 2017, Sefat was involved in a fatal altercation with his stepfather, in what was reported as an attempt to defend his mother. He admitted to the act, and initially faced murder charges.

In 2021, Iran’s Supreme Court overturned the original murder conviction, downgrading it to manslaughter. This verdict elimination of premeditated murder charges led to his bail release.
