A Visionary in Sport

Under his leadership, the first professional national league was established — the Takht Jamshid League, formed in 1973. This league is regarded as a landmark in Iranian domestic football, bringing structure, competition, and professional standards to clubs across the country. During Atabay’s tenure, football saw some of its greatest successes — on both national and continental levels. His vision helped raise the profile of football internationally, and his role in AFC positioned more prominently in Asian football governance.

Following the political upheavals (post-1979), Atabay left the country. But his legacy remained: many regard the period of his administration as a golden age for  football. He helped lay the foundations of professional football via the Takht Jamshid League — elevating club football to a new level. Under his leadership, national team flourished, achieving international successes that remain a proud part of the country’s football heritage. As president of the AFC, he represented Iranian football on the continental stage — giving a voice within Asia’s football governance.
