 In 1870, a passing spice merchant abandoned his terminally sick camel there and, on his return, found that it had recovered after bathing itself regularly in a pool of Naftalan’s crude oil. German entrepreneurs at the time, having established that the oil was too heavy to be used industrially, were nevertheless sending the supposedly medicinal substance back to their homeland.
