Fifty Years of Pop Evolution

The Black Cats are more than just a band; they are a cultural institution in Persian music, bridging musical past with the modern globalized era. From Tehran’s nightclubs of the 1960s to Los Angeles’ Persian pop scene, they have left an indelible mark on the hearts of fans worldwide. One of the most unique aspects of the Black Cats is their ability to evolve while maintaining a recognizable sound. Over the decades, the band has gone through numerous lineup changes, yet their identity as a leading Persian pop group remained intact.

Founded by Shahbal Shabpareh in 1967 in Tehran. Original lineup included a small group of young singers and instrumentalists. Achieved domestic fame through nightclub performances, live TV appearances, and concerts. Style: Pop infused with Western rock, funk, and disco influences — a fresh sound at the time. Following the 1979 Revolution, many band members emigrated to the United States, especially Los Angeles. Shahbal Shabpareh continued to manage and reform the group with new members from the diaspora.
