Born in New York City in 1942 to Italian-American parents, Scorsese grew up in the streets of Little Italy. Suffering from severe asthma as a child, he spent much of his time indoors watching movies. What began as an escape soon became a lifelong passion. After studying film at New York University, Scorsese emerged as part of a new generation of filmmakers that transformed American cinema in the 1970s.
