In studio settings, actors may work on soundstages, which are large indoor spaces designed to mimic real-world environments. They may also work in front of green screens, which allow special effects to be added later in post-production. Voice actors may work in recording studios, where they record dialogue for animated films or video games. These studios are often small and soundproof, with high-quality microphones and other equipment to capture the actor’s voice. Voice actors may work alone or with other actors, depending on the project.

Actors portray characters in stories such as plays, musicals, films, television shows and radio shows. They engage with the audience and convince them through altered speech patterns, hand gestures and more that they truly are the character. When necessary, actors also change their appearance such as their hair color or body weight to physically portray and embody their character. An Actor portrays a character with their physical presence, voice, and ability to emote through both. To bring a character to life, an Actor must analyze their motivations via the script, memorize the dialogue in it, work with the Director to further develop the character, and mine their own emotional life to authentically embody the figure they’re portraying in the script.
