Madeleine Albright used jewelry as a diplomatic tool

A zebra pin by KUO worn in 1997
Albright wore a vintage zebra on a diplomatic visit to South Africa to meet President Nelson Mandela on December 12, 1997. Here, she listened to South African deputy President Thabo Mbeki answer questions at their joint press conference in Pretoria. Albright had talks with Mbeki before she met with Mandela. Albright owned more than 200 pins, which are now on display at the National Museum of American Diplomacy. The “Read My Pins” exhibit shows her most famous brooches and explains the meanings behind them.
