On this day, we remember those who answered the call to serve and never had the opportunity to return home. We remember the young men and women whose lives were cut short, the families who lost someone they loved, and the communities that continue to carry their memories. Every fallen service member had a life beyond their uniform. They were sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors.
They had dreams, hopes, plans, and people waiting for them at home. Remembering them means remembering the human lives behind the names engraved on memorials and monuments. Memorial Day also reminds us that freedom and security have come with sacrifice. The opportunities and liberties we experience today exist within a history shaped by the service and sacrifice of countless individuals. While we can never repay those who gave everything, we can honor their memory by remembering them with gratitude and respect.
