Singers should also be musicians. This means understanding the basics of music theory, how music is arranged and produced, and the various performing techniques required of all musicians, such as blending their sound, counting bars and beats, and giving and following cues (signals from the conductor or other musicians). They must learn how to communicate effectively with the other musicians and with their audience. With many techniques to learn, aspiring singers often choose to attend music school or take private lessons with an accomplished vocal teacher and coach.
