The titles “editor in chief” and “managing editor” are sometimes used interchangeably by people who do not understand the difference in their roles. They are truly two distinct jobs. A comparison might be that the editor in chief is similar to the chief executive officer of a company, while the managing editor is more like the chief operating officer.
