Swedish traders sailed routes to the Far East and back, forming the Swedish East India Company, while ships bearing thousands of Swedish emigres sailed off in the opposite direction, heading for the U.S. The exodus was so vast that for a time, that up to 1 percent of the country’s population was shipping out every year.
