The Red Crescent is a humanitarian symbol and movement that plays a vital role in providing aid and relief during emergencies, conflicts, and natural disasters. It is closely associated with the global network known as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The Red Crescent is an emblem used by many countries—primarily in the Islamic world—as an alternative to the Red Cross symbol. It represents neutrality, protection, and humanitarian assistance.
Like the Red Cross, it is recognized under international law, especially the Geneva Conventions, as a protective symbol for medical and relief workers in conflict zones. The Red Crescent symbol was first adopted during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) by the Ottoman Empire. While the Red Cross symbol was originally intended to be neutral, some countries felt it resembled a Christian symbol. The Red Crescent was introduced as a culturally appropriate alternative while maintaining the same humanitarian purpose.
