Halsman later moved to the United States, where his career expanded rapidly. He became a major contributor to Life magazine and created numerous memorable covers and portraits. Rather than simply photographing his subjects in conventional poses, Halsman often looked for ways to reveal their character and spontaneity. One of Halsman’s most famous creative ideas was his “Jumpology” series. He asked celebrities and other prominent people to jump in front of his camera.
Halsman believed that jumping could temporarily break down a person’s carefully controlled public image and reveal something more natural about their personality. The resulting photographs were energetic, humorous, and unconventional. Halsman also had a long and influential artistic relationship with the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Together, they created imaginative photographs that combined photography with surrealism.
