Atule’er, often known as the “cliff village,” is a remote village located in Sichuan Province, China. It became widely known because of its dramatic location high on steep cliffs, where villagers once relied on a series of narrow wooden ladders to travel between their homes and the outside world. These ladders, attached to the cliff face, were the only way for residents to climb up and down the mountain, making daily life extremely challenging and dangerous.
The village is home mainly to members of the Yi ethnic minority, who have lived in this mountainous region for generations. Due to its isolation, Atule’er lacked access to basic services such as education, healthcare, and modern transportation for many years. Children were forced to climb the ladders daily to attend school, facing serious risks in all weather conditions. Despite these hardships, the villagers developed strong resilience and a deep connection to their land and traditions.
