Peyman Aref is a student activist, journalist, and political figure who became known for his activities in support of political and academic freedoms. He was born in 1982 and studied political science and law. During his university years, he became involved in student activities and expressed his opinions about political and social issues. His activities brought him into conflict with authorities and had a major impact on his education and personal life.
Aref became particularly active in student movements during the 2000s. In 2002, he participated in protests connected to the case of academic and intellectual Hashem Aghajari. His involvement in student activism resulted in his arrest and detention. Later, his political activities also affected his education. Human Rights Watch reported that he had been admitted to a graduate program at the University of Tehran but was prevented from continuing his studies.
