Hamtramck has long been a haven for immigrants of different backgrounds. For decades, it was settling place for people from Poland. In recent years, large populations of Yemeni and Bangladeshi immigrants have moved there. At 44 percent, it has the highest percentage of immigrants of any city in Michigan. According to the Detroit News, Michigan accepted the fourth most refugees—behind Texas, California, and New York—of any state in the U.S. from 2012 to 2018.
