Ghafouri was referring to an economic crisis, partially caused by the US sanctions, that has led to soaring food prices in recent months. According to the state-run Statistical Centre, food prices have increased between 20 percent and 250 percent in one year, depending on the product. During a February 20 match between Esteghlal, currently fifth-ranked in pro league, and Pars FC, fans at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran began chanting in support of Ghafouri’s comment.
Voria Ghafouri, 31, a right back for Tehran football team Esteghlal, appeared to criticise hardline foreign policy in an Instagram post and interview last week. Voria Ghafouri is a footballer who plays for the Persian Gulf Pro League club Esteghlal, for which he is captain, and the national team. He has played much of his career as a right-back and also played as a right winger occasionally.
