The Cannes Film Festival 2023 celebrates good films (obviously). But it’s also become fertile ground for a specific type of European glamour. America does the baseball caps and sunglasses celeb incognito thing so well. Britain has its self-deprecating acceptance speeches and classic suits. But over the Channel, things get a little experimental; a little breathless; a little ‘a kiss to each cheek’ as audiences openly weep and cry ‘bravo!’ at landmark cinema. It’s theatrical in that self-assured way only continental Europeans can pull off – and the clothes match.
