The typical work environment of prison wardens greatly varies depending on the correctional facility where they work. For instance, newer facilities tend to have a better organisational environment. Prisoners are more spaced out and live in temperature-controlled areas, providing a more comfortable environment for everyone.
A prison warden’s work environment also depends on the security level of the facility. Correctional facilities usually have three categories of security levels—minimum, medium and maximum. Minimum security facilities house non-violent prisoners, which can make for a less stressful environment. Conversely, maximum security facilities house prisoners convicted of more violent crimes, which means the work environment can involve more conflict. Medium security facilities fall somewhere between the minimum and maximum security.
