In 2015, Saudi women were finally allowed the right to vote – nearly a century after the UK – however only in local elections which have limited decision-making powers on issues such as rubbish collection and street maintenance. Women cannot stand for or vote for higher positions of governance although King Abdullah did appoint 30 women to the country’s top advisory Shura Council.
