Vigen Derderian (1929–2003), widely known simply as Vigen, was one of the most influential and beloved singers in the history of music. Often referred to as the “Sultan of Pop” or the “King of Persian Pop,” Vigen revolutionized the music industry by introducing a modern style that blended Western musical influences with Persian melodies and poetry. His smooth baritone voice, charismatic stage presence, and innovative use of the guitar helped shape the future of Persian popular music and inspired generations of singers and musicians.
Vigen was born on November 23, 1929, in Hamadan, to an Armenian family. Growing up in a multicultural environment, he was exposed to both Armenian and Persian musical traditions from an early age. His passion for music developed during his youth, and he taught himself to play the guitar, an instrument that would later become one of his trademarks. Before entering the music industry, Vigen worked in various occupations while continuing to develop his musical skills.
