The Dhofar War

The Dhofar War was an armed conflict that took place in the Dhofar region of southern Oman from 1963 to 1976. It was one of the most significant conflicts in the modern history of the Arabian Peninsula because it involved local political grievances, revolutionary movements, regional rivalries, and international intervention during the Cold War. The war was fought primarily between the Sultanate of Oman and insurgent groups seeking political and social change in Dhofar.

The conflict began as a local rebellion against the rule of Sultan Said bin Taimur. Over time, it developed into a broader revolutionary movement influenced by Arab nationalism, socialism, and Marxism. The Omani government eventually received military assistance from Britain, under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and other regional partners. After years of fighting, the insurgency was largely defeated in 1975, and the final stages of military operations continued into 1976.
