One of his most prominent public roles was as a member of the Board of Directors of the Export–Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank). Nominated during the administration of President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Kian worked on issues related to international trade and export financing. Kian later became widely known through his association with the Flynn Intel Group, a consulting and lobbying firm co-founded with former U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. His involvement in lobbying work connected to Turkish interests led to a lengthy legal case in the United States concerning foreign-agent registration laws.

After several years of legal proceedings, the case against him was ultimately dismissed with prejudice in 2023, ending the prosecution.Beyond business and government service, Kian has been involved in policy discussions and public commentary on international affairs, economics, and Middle Eastern issues.
