Her father, Professor Mohammad Dehghani-Azar, was a companion of Sattar Khan, the celebrated National Commander, and a prominent political figure in Tabriz. Azar Hekmat-Shoar had one sister named Alam-Taj and three brothers named Rasoul, Houshang, and Dariush. Her younger brother, Colonel Dariush Dehghani-Azar, was a senior-ranking police officer and commander of the Nima Guard. Following the 1979 Revolution, he was arrested with the rank of full colonel for leading a group known as the Nima Group, a branch of military personnel loyal to the monarchy.
He was accused of leading the so-called Nima coup and accepting the position of prime minister of a transitional government. Along with five other senior military officers, he was sentenced to death in a trial presided over by Judge Mohammad Mohammadi Reyshahri. He was executed by firing squad on December 12, 1982 (21 Azar 1361). Azar died in 1353 (1974/75) as a result of a traffic accident and was buried in Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery in Tehran.
