Alexander Lukashenko was born on August 30, 1954, in a rural area of Belarus (then part of the Soviet Union). Before entering politics, he worked as a farm manager and served in the Soviet Border Troops. His political rise began in the early 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1994, he was elected as Belarus’s first president in what was initially considered a relatively free election. Campaigning on an anti-corruption platform, he quickly gained popularity among citizens who were struggling with economic instability after independence.
Over time, elections in Belarus have been widely criticized by international observers for lacking transparency and fairness. Lukashenko has remained in power through multiple contested elections. Belarus under his rule has maintained closer economic and political ties with Russia compared to many other former Soviet states. However, the relationship has sometimes been strained, as Lukashenko has tried to balance dependence on Russia with maintaining Belarusian sovereignty.
