While the rose reprises its role as ancient emblem of England, with its echo of the heraldic motif of the Tudor rose, it is equally a romantic symbol of the sprawling English garden. Replacing the hieratic horticulture of medieval design, a softer garden aesthetic is also evident in the spray of foliage and flowers in the marginalia of the coronation invitation. In designing this rambling rose, Szell was inspired by the gardens at his country house, Mamhead Park, in Devon. Similarly, King Charles, cultivated his own love of gardens and the natural world at Highgrove, his private Gloucestershire estate.
