Commemoration in Toronto

Toronto, one of the most diverse cities in the world, will once again open its doors to history, culture, and community as it hosts the Commemoration of Cyrus the Great — an event dedicated to celebrating the enduring legacy of one of humanity’s most remarkable leaders. This annual gathering unites people from all walks of life — scholars, students, artists, civic leaders, and members of the Canadian community — in honour of a man whose vision of governance, human rights, and respect for diversity continues to inspire over 2,500 years later.

Cyrus II of Persia, better known as Cyrus the Great (ca. 600–530 BCE), was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire — the first great Persian Empire and one of the most influential civilizations in world history. The Cylinder’s message — promoting justice, freedom, and respect for all — has echoed through centuries and remains deeply relevant in today’s world. In a time of global tension, cultural fragmentation, and questions about leadership and identity, the story of Cyrus reminds us that governance rooted in compassion and justice can unite rather than divide.
