While some were farmers, gardeners, manual laborers, or owned small businesses, others were ministers, lawyers, ambassadors, and financiers who lived there for its pleasant climate. Maleki’s family fell into the first group; his father, who had a small pastry shop, was known as Mash Hossein the Confectioner.
