Greek actress and singer dies aged 96

Like so many other Greek artists and intellectuals, Papas fled Greece during the right-wing military junta of 1967 to 1974, and lived in exile in Italy and New York. One of her last roles was in the 2001 World War II film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. In 2018, an announcement said that she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for five years already.
