The Birt hat, dubbed “Biretta” in English, is the hat of Catholic clergy since the 13th century. The four corners of this hat are dipped in an arc in Germany, England, France and the Netherlands. The color of the hat also determines the rank of cleric. Pope does not use this hat. The black priest’s hat and the cardinal hat are red.
