Redefining Graphic Storytelling and Feminist Expression

Marjane Satrapi (born 1969) is a French graphic novelist, illustrator, and filmmaker best known for her acclaimed graphic memoir Persepolis, which chronicles her childhood and adolescence during and after the Revolution. Her work is celebrated for its honesty, emotional depth, and powerful blend of political history and personal storytelling. Satrapi was born in Rasht, and raised in a progressive, politically engaged family in Tehran. Growing up during a period of political upheaval left a lasting impact on her worldview, shaping the themes of identity, freedom, and resistance that appear throughout her work.

As a young teenager, her parents sent her to Europe for safety and education, an experience that deepened her sense of cultural duality and alienation—central themes in Persepolis. Published in four volumes between 2000 and 2003 (later compiled), Persepolis is considered one of the most influential graphic memoirs ever created. In 2007, Satrapi co-directed the animated film adaptation of Persepolis with Vincent Paronnaud.
