The bitter fate of presidents

The President acts as the guardian of Past Reserves. This includes the reserves of key statutory boards and government companies (SBGC) listed under the Fifth Schedules to the Constitution. SBGCs include GIC Pte Ltd, Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd, the Housing and Development Board (HDB), Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Central Provident Fund Board (CPFB) and Jurong Town Corporation (JTC). The President may veto any budget or specific transaction (e.g. giving of guarantees or raising of loans) if it is likely to lead to a draw on Past Reserves.

The President is the figurehead of the club. In most cases, the President takes ultimate responsibility. They, with the rest of the Committee, essentially shape the aims of the club for the year. They will usually chair meetings (if absent a Vice President or Secretary can do this) and support the work of other committee members. A good President should have a fair idea of who is doing what and keep an eye on all club activity as they are responsible for ensuring that a club or society works effectively.  They should be able to provide leadership to the club/society and help build an effective society that works well, grows in membership, that is fun and accessible for all.
