After a period of reduced public performance following the 1978 Revolution, he resumed his artistic activities in the late 1990s and, later, in the 2010s performed live as well, sometimes alongside his son, Ehsan Khajeh-Amiri, a popular pop singer. Iraj has five children, and several of them are active in music, most notably Ehsan Khajeh-Amiri, who has achieved fame in the pop music scene. His family’s continued presence in the world of music is part of Iraj’s lasting cultural impact.
What distinguished Iraj from many of his contemporaries was not only the power of his voice, but his complete command of the Persian radif—the complex system of melodic modes that forms the foundation of traditional Iranian music. He was particularly admired for his mastery of avaz, the improvisational and emotionally expressive form of Persian singing. Unlike many singers who specialized in one or two modes, Iraj demonstrated fluency across multiple dastgahs such as Shur, Homayoun, Segah, Chahargah, and Mahur.
