The Sports and Hobbies

One of the Shah’s greatest passions was skiing. He frequently visited the Alborz Mountains north of Tehran, particularly the resort of Shemshak, which he helped popularize among elite. His interest in the sport encouraged the development of ski resorts and winter tourism, transforming the country into a regional hub for winter sports during his reign. A skilled equestrian, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi enjoyed horseback riding and polo—sports traditionally associated with Persian nobility. He often participated in polo matches and maintained a stable of well-bred horses. His fondness for equestrian activities symbolized both royal prestige and athletic discipline.

The Shah was also an avid tennis player and swimmer. He played tennis regularly with friends, diplomats, and members of the royal family. He also loved boating and water-skiing, particularly during his stays by the Caspian Sea and at the royal palaces in northern. Beyond conventional sports, the Shah had a keen interest in aviation. Trained as a pilot, he often flew his own aircraft. This pastime reflected his fascination with modern technology and his desire to project an image of progress and control.
