The main objective in wrestling is to outscore or pin an opponent using legal techniques. Wrestlers earn points by performing takedowns, escapes, reversals, and exposure moves. A match can end early if one wrestler pins the opponent’s shoulders to the mat, which is considered the most decisive victory. Every move requires excellent timing, balance, and precision. There are two main Olympic styles of wrestling.
Freestyle wrestling allows athletes to attack both the upper and lower body, including the legs. This style emphasizes speed, creativity, and a wide variety of techniques. Greco-Roman wrestling allows attacks only above the waist, making upper-body strength, powerful throws, and body control especially important. Both styles require years of practice and exceptional athletic ability.
