His next project, Women Without Men, a feature film written and directed in collaboration with Shirin Neshat interwove the lives of four women in the summer of 1953 – a pivotal moment in history during an American-led coup d’état. Women without Men won the Silver Lion for direction at the Venice International Film Festival in 2010. It was also screened at MOMA’s renowned New Directors/New Films Festival as well as the London International Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Sundance International Film Festival, among others.
