Before becoming a general, the president must nominate you. Then, the U.S. Senate needs to approve the decision. Since the Army limits how many generals can serve at once, you will only have the opportunity to serve once another general retires or passes away. Typically, generals must retire when they turn 62. Along with being able to convey your ideas verbally, there are many written documents you are dealing with in this role. Much of communication also involves being a good listener. You need to be able to gather important information from other officers and be sure you have a mutual understanding of every situation.
