The earthquake struck 1,131 people and hundreds of people suffered various injuries as the tsunami went to Sri Lanka. The earthquake center was 205 kilometers northwest of Sibulga in Sumatra and at a depth of 30 kilometers. The area where the BKSD earthquake occurred in 2004 also is highly geologically active, with three of the 15 major earthquakes detected in the area.
