From a young age he was drawn to the arts, especially theatre and cinema. In his teenage years he frequently skipped school to watch films as they gained popularity, feeding his passion for visual storytelling. His early scholarly interests led him to study Persian literature and traditional performing arts, exploring forms like Ta’zieh (Passion Play), Naqqāli (traditional storytelling), and other indigenous dramatic traditions.
Before venturing into cinema, Beyzaie established himself as one of Iran’s foremost playwrights and theatre scholars. His playwriting and theoretical writings helped reinvigorate Iranian theatre by weaving ancient mythology, folklore, and historical narratives with contemporary themes. His book Theatre (1965) is considered a foundational text on the history and forms of traditional theatre.
