Mitchiko became acquainted with his next wife Prince Akiuito in 1957 when he played tennis. Although many officials, including the mother of Akihio, the Emperor of that time in Japan, disagreed with their relationship, due to Mitchiko’s lineage, but they married in 1959, so Mitchiko was the first ordinary person to be a member of The family of the Japanese Empire married.
