Shams lived much of her life abroad, particularly in Europe and the United States, where she was known to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. After the Revolution of 1979, when the monarchy was overthrown, she, like many members of the royal family, was forced into exile. She spent her final years in the United States, living away from the public eye. Shams Pahlavi passed away in 1996 in London.
