In her later years, Shams lived in relative obscurity, particularly in comparison to her more famous brother. She spent time in various European cities and the United States, where she continued to enjoy the affluence she had been accustomed to, but the political situation and the tragic end of the Pahlavi monarchy were always looming in her thoughts. Shams remained connected with some members of the diaspora and occasionally made public appearances, but she generally stayed away from the media and political activism.
