The Political Calculus of Saudi arabia and the Shah

During the 1950s and early 1960s, interactions between the Shah and Saudi leaders were limited and cautious. Both countries were preoccupied with internal consolidation and regional stability. Diplomatic contacts focused on economic cooperation and oil policy, particularly through OPEC, founded in 1960. While Saudi Arabia was cautious of dominance, it occasionally aligned to counterbalance Soviet influence and revolutionary movements in the region.
